User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070725 Firefox/2.0.0.6
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070725 Firefox/2.0.0.6

When starting Firefox and a session is restored, sometimes a few tabs aren't reloaded correctly.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a few windows and a few tabs in them. Some should display file: URLs
2. make sure "When Firefox starts: Show my windows and tabs from last time" option is selected
3. exit Firefox (and confirm the dialogs; why is a separate one for each window? I know, this is already reported. And worked on, I hope.)
4. Start Windows
5. enter and OK all the dialogs that pop up (master password, page HTTP auth passwd etc... I have a few of this. Including duplicates; yep that is also already reported)
Actual Results:
Some tabs that had file URL (to HTML documents) are not reloaded.
The page is empty. The address/URL bar is empty.
The BACK button history shows entries that are correct (other file: URLs). But if click them, again a blank page is displayed. But if I middle click them, the correct page is correctly loaded in a new tab.

Expected Results:
tabs reopened correctly.

I also noticed, that if the problem tab is first in a window and therefore visible at start, the history ("back") button is empty (grayed out). If switch to another tab and back, the BACK button suddenly has the entries. (the page itself is still blank).
Can you reproduce this behavior on a clean profile (see <http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_manager> for how to create one)? If so, do you get any errors in Tools -> Error Console after having set javascript.options.showInConsole to true in about:config <http://kb.mozillazine.org/about:config>? If not, this bug seems to be WORKSFORME (i.e. you might be using a slightly defective extension).
Whiteboard: [worksforme?]
I only have these three add-ons:
 - DOM Inspector 1.8.1.6
 - Talkback 2.0.0.6
 - Spellchecker for Slovenian 0.1

Will try and report with clean profile.
David: Have you ever been able to reproduce this issue? If so, does updating to Firefox 3.0 help?
Unfortunately not (yet).
It does happen with my regular profile each time I start FF (I have a few windows and one of the tabs always gives this problem).

I also have a lot of password prompts on startup, maybe that is a contributing factor.

PS: Step 4 in my original report should be "4. Start Firefox" and not "4. Start Windows"

(In reply to comment #4)

If it does happen every time, could you please make a copy of sessionstore.js inside your profile folder and then start closing tabs and restarting until the issue no longer happens (in case it was triggered by a specific tab)? Of course you can close the tabs by the dozen - and as soon as it doesn't happen again, just copy sessionstore.js back and close the ones you suspect two by two.

It would significantly help if we could in the end get the minimal list of URLs required for reproducing this issue.
David: Has this ever happened again? If so, what about my comment #5?
I use FF 3.x now.
I haven't experienced this issue in a while.
Maybe v3.x fixed it.
If it happens again, I will report.
Thanks for the answer. -> WORKSFORME

Please reopen this bug and attach the faulty sessionstore.js, should it ever happen again.

It just happened with :
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090824 Firefox/3.5.3 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)

Situation similar as before: a bunch of windows and tabs.
The problematic tab is the selected one in the window, has an file: URL to some javadocs.

Maybe this is relevant: I started FF by clicking a link in Skype.

Will post more data as time allows.

It happened again, with more or less the same pages open as last time.
The page that failed to load is again Java API doc on local disc.

I tried to exit and restart FF several times, but the bug did not happen again.

Is there some logging for startup that could be activated and be useful in tracking this down?
Today this happened with a tab showing page http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/api/
So the problem is not limited to file: URLs.

The tab contenct is empty (grey).
The URL is in the address bar
The tab title says: Loading...

Browser:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4) Gecko/20091016 Firefox/3.5.4 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
And again the same tab did not load now when I started FF.

This time the page is white and the tab title says : (Untitled)

A had two FF windows to be restored, with a few tabs in each, one requiring a HTTP authentication and other requiring a login in a form, so the master password dialog appeared also.
all in safe mode?
No.
It happens every now an then and I didn't bother to start FF always in safe mode.
But I will in future ;-)
Starting in safe mode offers a few options in a startup dialog.
What should I select there?
Oops, sorry for last question, now I actually read the text in the dialog. ;-)

Now it happened in safe mode.
The http javadoc page was not loaded.

Is it important if the bug happened in regular mode, then I exited (with the problematic page not loaded) and started in safe mode? (maybe it was restored as it was, without the loaded content)
Is is still happening.

Changed the summary to reflect the issue better.

What happened:
 - I started FF, it restored two windows, each with more tabs
 - the first windows had about 12 tabs, most of the javadocs of various java libraries/projects
 - two of the were not loaded:
  - the second in row tab (call it tab A):
   - it was the selected tab in window
   - the URL bar has the correct URL
   - the page was empty
   - the tab title said "Loading..." (but the progress indicator was not indicating that, it was not animated)

  - the other tab (call it tab B):
   - the URL bar has the correct URL
   - the page was empty
   - the tab title had the correct page title

After restarting FF, tab B was loaded, while tab A still wasn't.

This time I had no password prompts (no such pages that would require it).
Summary: tabs with file URLs are not always restored → tabs/pages with Javadocs are not always restored
Here is my sessionrestore.js.

The problem does not happens always, but it might be useful.

NOTE: I camouflaged two addresses and a keyword (they appear in the other window, not in the one with javadocs tabs):

????????.com -> xxxxhide.com

???????????.com -> foobar.com

???? -> yyyy

(kept same number of characters)
Happened again with v3.6.3

I had two windows, one with 25 tabs, other with 14 tabs.

The page that was not restored was again a java API page: http://dozer.sourceforge.net/apidocs/index.html

I'll attach the sessionstore.js in a minute.
FF v3.6.12 , WinXP (note to myself: hostname haldol)

Problrmatic URL: http://google-web-toolkit.googlecode.com/svn/javadoc/2.1/index.html?overview-summary.html

Tab title says "Loading..." , URL bar has the correct URL, page empty (don't remember the color)
OK, maybe now I can offer more useful data.

I noticed again two Javadoc tabs not being loaded.

hostname: haldol
Firefox v3.6.12
OS: Windows XP Pro SP3

I started Firefox (normal, not safe mode)
I have several windows with many tabs stored and they were restored.
After a while I noticed in one FF window two javadoc tabs not being restored.
Their URLs are:

http://static.springsource.org/spring/docs/3.0.x/javadoc-api/index.html?org/springframework/beans/factory/BeanFactory.html

and

http://download.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/

Status:
 - URL bar is OK (has the proper URL)
 - tab title says "Loading..."
 - page is gray (not white, as when a new tab is created by ctrl-t)

In this moment I made a copy sessionstore.js (named "sessionstore.js-1-while ff still running")

Then I exited FF.

saved sessionstore.js again (as sessionstore.js-2-after ff was closed)

started FF

The 2 problem tabs are same as before (grey, Loading...)

saved sessionstore.js-3-after ff started for second time

exit FF

start FF in safe mode

The 2 problem tabs are same as before (grey, Loading...)
Tab icon is the pages favicon (was the FF spinning one for a few seconds after start, then changes to favicon)
The reload button is disabled for both.

exit FF

save "sessionstore.js-4-after ff safemode exited"

start FF in safe mode again, just to confirm the 2 tabs are still not being loaded.

If I click the green right arrow icon right of the URL bar, both pages load without issues.

I'll attach the sessionstore file in a ZIP archive (would 7z be also acceptable? it compresses almost 20 times better)
Attached file The sessionstore files
(7z gives 7-8 times smaller result,, not 20 times)

Additional info:
After loading the 2 tabs by clicking the green right arrow, I exited FF and started again in safe mode. This time both pages loaded.
Now I experienced this problem on a page that is not a Javadoc. It was a COM API documentation. It has a frame on the left with the list of contents and a main, bigger frame on the right (and some smaller subframes).

It is the HP OTA COM API docs for HP ALM QC v11.00 (free trial version downloadable at HP.com , the API doc is in the Help.zip file - no need to install the entire sotware package)

This was not in safemode. I will keep looking out to see this in safe mode.

zpao, do you need anything else to consider this bug confirmed?
David, can you still reproduce? I think this has been fixed a couple times over by now. See bug 624917 and bug 632835 / bug 624917.
I do not see it in a while.
Will report if I do.
